Employers covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act are required to grant a total of 12 workweeks of unpaid leave during a defined 12-month period (or 26 workweeks of unpaid leave to care for a military service member). However, an employer can choose how to define that 12-month period. No matter the method, accurate tracking and timely delivery of employee notifications are critical to compliance.
