Handrails should be found on both sides of stairways and positioned at a minimum of 34 inches to no higher than 38 inches above stairs, ramps, and other walking surfaces. Properly positioned handrails should be designed so they can be grasped firmly and provide leverage, help users keep their balance, and minimize the risk of slips, stumbles, and falls.
